John Christopher was a Captain in the United States Air Force, where he served as a fighter pilot assigned to Air Defense Command in 1969. A year prior, he was transferred from Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. He had been up for the space program, but failed to qualify for astronaut training. In July 1969, Christopher, whose call sign was Bluejay 4, was sent to intercept and investigate a mysterious radar contact that appeared in the sky over Offutt Air Force Base. That contact turned out to be the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, which had accidentally traveled back in time from 2267. His fighter jet was caught in the ship's tractor beam, but was unable to withstand the beam's force and began to break apart. Christopher was beamed aboard the starship, saving his life, but causing a potential problem to the proper flow of history, as it was soon discovered that Christopher and his wife, who already had two daughters, were supposed to have a son, Shaun Geoffrey Christopher — as yet unborn — who would go on to lead the first mission to Saturn. Christopher agreed to help the Enterprise crew erase any trace of their appearance in the 20th century, and when the ship returned to 2267, Christopher was beamed into his past self's body before he was beamed aboard,[1] a process later called "reintegration" by the Temporal Integrity Commission.[2]
