The Federation Starship Richtofen was a Larson class destroyer commissioned to Mark II specifications on Reference Stardate 2/0111 (November 2259). The Richtofen was refit to the Larson class Mark VI specifications on Reference Stardate 2/1311 (December 2270). On Reference Stardate 2/1502 (July 2271), the Richtofen was recalled for an engine refit and scheduled maintenance to shipboard systems. As the ship's refit and systems checks neared completion, spirited ensigns and sympathetic workers painted the ship bright red in honor of its namesake. Starfleet Command decided to leave the ship that color, despite the breach in regulations, though all officers involved were mildly disciplined. The ship was refit again to the Mark VII specifications on Reference Stardate 2/1712 (December 2273). As of Reference Stardate 2/2306 (June 2286), the Richtofen was still on active service, assigned to the Klingon border.
