Construction on the Federation Starship Saladin, the lead vessel of the Saladin class destroyer, was authorized by the Star Fleet Appropriation of Stardate 0965[1] and commissioned in 2185.[2] Lieutenant Commander Leonard Konigsburg commanded the Saladin until circa 2203, when Commander James T. Kirk succeeded him as the ship's captain, a position he held until his promotion and transfer to the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 in 2207.[3] Kirk was joined by Lieutenant Gary Mitchell, an old friend from Star Fleet Academy whom Kirk had requested on his first command.[4]
