The production of twenty Saladin class destroyers were authorized by the Starfleet Appropriation of Stardate 0965[1] and the class was launched in Reference Stardate 1/85 (2242)[2] with the commissioning of the U.S.S. Saladin NCC-500. The Starfleet Appropriation of Stardate 3030 authorized the production of an additional 10 vessels of the Siva subclass, beginning with the U.S.S. Siva NCC-520,[1] commissioned on Reference Stardate 1/8703 (March 2244), but enormous design flaws resulted in sharply-curtailed production.[2] The Starfleet Appropriation of Stardate 4699 authorized the production of an additional 26 vessels of the Cochise subclass, starting with the U.S.S. Cochise NCC-530,[1] which launched on Reference Stardate 1/89 (2246). The class saw extensive service during the Klingon War.[2]
