In 2377, the Federation Starship Challenger, a Galaxy class vessel, was part of an ad hoc fleet dispatched to intercept a Borg Sphere that appeared from a transwarp conduit within a light year of Earth. Upon arriving, however, the Sphere exploded, and the U.S.S. Voyager NCC-74656, which had spent the last seven years lost in the Delta Quadrant, emerged from within the Sphere.[1]

Captain Geordi La Forge, who had previously served as first officer and chief engineer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E under Captain Data, was named commanding officer of the Challenger in 2397; he was succeeded as chief engineer on the Enterprise by Lieutenant Commander Nog.[2] After Ambassador Sokketh was exposed as an Undine infiltrator in 2409, the Challenger led a task force to P'Jem to prevent his escape.[3] Named for the early Human spacecraft, destroyed in 1986 in an explosion that claimed the lives of seven astronauts shortly after launch.
