The Federation Starship Challenger, the prototype vessel of the Challenger class,[1] was on a deep space exploration mission in 2234.[2] The Challenger was in service concurrently with both the Enterprise class U.S.S. Challenger NCC-1715, which was scrapped in 2235, as well as the Excelsior class U.S.S. Challenger NCC-2023, which was commissioned in 2236.[3]
