Brenton class
Commissioned | RSD 2/1404 (April 2214) |
The Brenton class cruiser was first brought into service with the commissioning of the U.S.S. Brenton NCC-1200[1] on Reference Stardate 2/1404 (April 2214).[2] Designed and built by the Andorian firm of A'Alakor Landiss Inc., the Brenton class was designed as a fill-in for the Constitution class cruisers, being cheaper to build and, with a much smaller crew, to operate. Designed more for combat than research, the Brenton nevertheless did have some research facilities aboard. Initially intended to have the older FWC warp engines, the design was quickly altered when the FWF was introduced. The vessels' aft-firing torpedo launcher caused many opponents to think twice before attacking from the rear; in fact, when the Brenton class first saw combat with Klingon forces, the Klingons were allowed to approach from the rear. Seeing a perfect opportunity to attack, the Klingons instead were annihilated at close range by the "stupid, crippled Federation captains," causing the Klingons to treat the Brenton class with respect going forward.[1]
Although only fifty were planned initially, and the hull numbers 1200 through 1250 were reserved for them,[1] far more were eventually built. Of the 185 vessels constructed by Reference Stardate 2/2306 (June 2223), 28 Mark Is, 57 Mark IIIs, and 18 Mark Vs remained in active service, with 12 Mark Is in reserve fleets; one Mark I was in use by Star Fleet Training Command, six Mark Is were destroyed, one Mark I was captured by the Klingons, one Mark I and one Mark III were listed as missing, two Mark Is and one Mark III had been scrapped, and two Mark Is were disarmed and sold to commercial interests. The Brenton class was produced at the Mars, Cait, and Morena shipyards at a combined rate of twelve per year.[2]
