  • NBC accepts the pilot and orders Star Trek to begin production.[1]

  • Star Trek is in danger of cancellation due to lower-than-anticipated ratings. An impassioned letter-writing campaign, spearheaded by a number of well-known and respected science fiction authors, convinces NBC to renew the series for a second season, and not to make any changes to the format in an attempt to appeal to a wider audience.[1]
  • 8 December: TOS 12: "The Conscience of the King" airs.[1]
  • 15 December: TOS 08: "Balance of Terror" airs.[1]
  • 29 December: TOS 17: "Shore Leave" airs.[1]
