Commissioned on Reference Stardate 2/2210 (October 2285),[1] the Federation Starship Excelsior, known as the "Great Experiment," served as a test-bed for experiments with transwarp drive[2] before the project was ultimately abandoned. Originally under the leadership of Captain Robert Styles,[2] command was later transferred to Captain Hikaru Sulu,[3] who commanded the ship for nine years.[4] On Reference Stardate 2/9005 (May 2353), the Excelsior was transferred to Starfleet Training Command for use as a training vessel.[5]
