Computers were data storage and control devices.[1] Computers from the 1960s, computers were bulky, loud, and limited in their capabilities.[2] In 2254, the Talosians accessed the computer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, and learned a great deal about Human culture and history.[1] A computer was also able to actively scan individuals, which allowed it to serve as a lie detector, much to the chagrin of Harry Mudd when he came aboard the Enterprise on Stardate 1329.1.[3] While Samuel Cogley owned a computer, which was capable of instant recall of any case history, but preferred to use books and his brain, which he called the "biological computer" in his head.[4] The Eminians and Vendikans conducted a war between their planets for five centuries via computer, until it was ended in 2267 by the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701.[5]
