Reliant class (FASA)
FASA Timeline
The Reliant class research cruiser[1] was introduced on Reference Stardate 2/1507 (July 2215),[2] when the Anton class U.S.S. Reliant NCC-1864 underwent extensive modifications and refits that began on Reference Stardate 2/1410 (October 2214),[2] not unlike the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701. The Reliant class was one of the first starship classes fitted with the new style warp engines. One interesting note is that the engine itself is the same as that aboard the Constitution class, albeit paired with the newer FWF-1 nacelles.[1]
The Reliant class was primarily a research support cruiser, and was less heavily armed than the Constitution and Enterprise classes. The class was primarily used in areas where hostiles or unknowns may be encountered, but the research being performed did not warrant the use of larger vessels. The class was equipped with larger research facilities than the Enterprise class, however, and boasted large quarters for civilian research personnel.[1]
The Reliant class was further fitted with a "roll bar" weapons pod, which gave a better field of fire and allowed the addition of photon torpedoes to the ship's armament. The Anton class had suffered from a lack of more powerful weaponry during the Four Years War, during which sixteen Anton class vessels were destroyed. The pod featured phaser banks mounted on the outer edges of the "roll bar," and the fore and aft torpedo launchers mounted centrally.
The Reliant class was built under a contract with the Federation Naval Yards, and Reliant class vessels initially featured registry numbers in the 26226 through 26300 range,[1] though production eventually far exceeded that number of vessels. The Reliant class was produced at the Morena, Sol IV, and Salazaar shipyards at a rate of ten per year.[2]
