Revision as of 19:50, 27 September 2019

The Federation Starship Valiant, a Ranger class starship[1] two years[2] into a five-year mission of exploration,[3][4] was lost in the vicinity of the Eminiar system in 2217.[1] The fate of the Valiant remained a mystery until the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 visited Eminiar VII on Stardate 3192.1. The Valiant and its crew were declared a "casualty" of the "war" between Eminiar VII and Vendikar. The ship was destroyed, and its crew killed[5] by the inhabitants of Eminiar VII.[6] A handwritten log from the Valiant's first officer, Commander Lee Billings, was recovered at that time, and brought back to the Federation.[7]

First Officer's Personal log, this is probably my last entry. I don't know if anyone is going to find this. I don't even know if it matters. If a Starfleet ship comes into orbit of Eminiar VII, it's a [sic] good as dead. They have heat beams that overwhelmed Valiant's defensive systems immediately. After that first hit, almost every panel on the bridge was exploding. The captain was dead. I sounded the evacuation code signal, and got to an escape pod. Four crew members made it with me, and when they hit us again. [sic] we got out. One of them, Ensign Fernandez. Jonathan... he died when we crashed. The other two, Lieutenants Friedman and Shiban, were captured trying to get us food yesterday. There's no way to rescue them. The Eminian security is the best I've ever seen, and their disruptor weapons are very deadly. Don't know what happened. The captain communicated with their ruling council, it seemed to be fine, and then I don't know. I'm in the basement of some building in their capital city. They're going to find me. If this log does survive me, please[7]

Although the FASA supplement "The Federation" stated that the Valiant was in the final year of a five-year mission, Last Unicorn Games' "Core Game Book" and Decipher's "Starfleet Operations Manual" both establish that the Valiant was lost in 2217, and that the Ranger class was first commissioned in 2215, necessitating that the ship be two years into a five-year mission at most. "Federation: The First 150 Years" stated instead that the Valiant was a Daedalus class vessel, lost within a decade of its launch in 2162; this is inconsistent with dialogue in "A Taste of Armageddon," which stated that the ship was lost "more than fifty years" before the episode, which was set in 2267.
