Stardate 5221.3: After being pulled into orbit around a dead star, the Enterprise comes across a huge, deserted starship inhabited by a parasitic life form.
Pulled off course by Questar M-17, an imploded negative star mass, the Enterprise discovers a strange, ancient starship inhabited by a formless and malevolent life form. The ship's builders failed to rid themselves of the creature and attempted to destroy their vessel rather than risk bringing the entity with them elsewhere in the galaxy. The creature takes control of the Enterprise, but Kirk and Spock, by heading directly toward Questar M-17, trick the entity into believing that they are about to destroy themselves, and the creature flees. Using a slingshot maneuver, the Enterprise escapes Questar M-17's gravity, leaving the entity trapped in orbit of the dead star.
