- A fungus devastates the crops and food supplies on Tarsus IV. Governor Kodos declares martial law, and assumes emergency powers. A follower of eugenics, Kodos decrees that those he deems not vital to the colony's survival are to be executed, in order to provide enough supplies for the remaining colonists to survive. Four thousand colonists are put to death, only for relief shipments to arrive soon thereafter. Kodos is believed to have died, when a charred corpse is discovered at his last known location. Nine eyewitnesses to the massacre survive, including Kevin Riley, Thomas Leighton, and James Kirk. At virtually the same time, Anton Karidian appears, though no records of him exist prior to this date.[7]
