Scott once referred to himself as "an old Aberdeen pub-crawler."[3] In addition to English/Galacta,[4] Scott also spoke Gaelic.[1]

Upon graduation from Star Fleet Academy in 2187, Ensign Scott's first assignment was to the U.S.S. Constitution NCC-1700, still under construction at the San Francisco Fleet Yards, as an Assistant Engineering Officer. Scott helped install the ship's warp drive system, then crewed the ship as it made test flights within the Sol system and to Alpha Centauri.[2]

In 2189, after two years aboard the Constitution, Scott was promoted to Lieutenant, j.g. and transferred to the U.S.S. Hood NCC-1703, under Captain Hojo Yorii. On Stardate 1469.2 (11 August 2192), Scott was awarded a citation for conspicuous gallantry by Captain Yorii. During an engagement with a Kangor class Klingon battlecruiser, Scott "maintained engine performance during battle despite the injury and later death of the Chief Engineering Officer and severe damage to the stern baffle panels and sensory array." Soon thereafter, on Stardate 1469.7, Scott was promoted to lieutenant and transferred to the destroyer U.S.S. Coridan Queen NCC-561 as that ship's Chief Engineering Officer.[2]

Scott remained aboard the Coridan Queen until 2200, when he was transferred to the U.S.S. Steven Barnes NCC-559. He remained aboard the Barnes until 2207, when he was recommended for promotion to Lieutenant Commander and transfer to the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 by Commodore Kenneth MacAlpine, one of his former captains.[2]
