The Constellation class heavy cruiser, first commissioned in 2275,[1] featured a four-engine-nacelle configuration.[2] The warp nacelles and several components of the saucer section shared many design similarities with the Constitution and Miranda class designs of the era.[2] The class also utilized expanded navigational and lateral sensor templates, and assumed a leading role in both deep space exploration and long-range perimeter defense in the early 24th century.[3] The class distinguished itself, particularly in the action involving the U.S.S. Stargazer NCC-2893 under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. It was in this action that Picard introduced the now-famous Picard Maneuver.[2] Constellation class ships were on the verge of being phased out in the mid-2360s,[4] but some were still in service in 2370.[5] Several had already been decommissioned by 2365, including the U.S.S. Hathaway NCC-2593, which had been stripped of its offensive systems and rendered "warp inactive" by removing all antimatter from its warp reaction system.[4]
When the Enterprise class was phased out, it created the need for a new heavy cruiser. The new design, the Constellation class heavy cruiser, was a radical departure in warp architecture[6] because of its four-engine-nacelle configuration.[2] This design produced high transwarp speeds, but the vessel's engineering and main power converter areas were vulnerable. The class distinguished itself, particularly in the action involving the USS Stargazer under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. It was in this action that Picard introduced the now-famous Picard Maneuver. Of the 26 Constellation Class cruisers constructed, by 3/03 20 were still in service, 3 were destroyed, 1 was scrapped, and 2 lost (though one of these, the Stargazer, was subsequently recovered and decommissioned).[6]
