Prime Timeline
(The root of all realities)

Stardate 5143.3: The Enterprise finds a long-lost explorer.

Philanthropist Carter Winston, missing for five years, is discovered aboard a damaged one-man craft. In a reunion with his fiancée, Lieutenant Anne Nored, who is stationed aboard the Enterprise, Winston states that he has changed and can no longer marry her. Winston is, in reality, a shape-changing Vendorian, who assumes Captain Kirk's appearance to bring the Enterprise into the Neutral Zone, where Romulan vessels quickly surround the starship. The Vendorian is a Romulan spy — but because he absorbed so many memories from the real Carter Winston before the man died, he has developed feelings for Nored as well and cannot allow her to be harmed. The Vendorian transforms himself into a deflector shield, sacrificing himself to save the Enterprise.
