Brent was assigned to the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 as an officer in the science division as early as 2266. When the ship went to Red Alert during first contact with the First Federation on Stardate 1512.2, Lieutenant Brent reported to the bridge, where he assisted Ensign Leslie at the engineering station.[1] Brent was among several crewmembers distracted by the "wiving settlers" brought aboard by Harry Mudd on Stardate 1329.1.[2] When the ship was in orbit of M-113, Brent accompanied Bobby onto a turbolift, where they encountered Lieutenant Uhura, who asked Bobby to take a look at the door to her quarters, which was malfunctioning.[3] During a mission to Psi 2000 on Stardate 1704.2, Lieutenant Brent took over the navigator's station when Lieutenant Kevin Riley was infected with an unknown disease.[4] He manned the navigation station once again on Stardate 3025.3 when the ship was orbiting the recently-discovered Amusement Planet.[5]

Brent frequently served on the bridge, usually at one of the stations on the port side adjacent to the viewscreen, including when the ship took aboard Charlie Evans on Stardate 1533.6,[6] when the ship engaged a Romulan Bird of Prey that crossed the Neutral Zone and destroyed several Earth Outposts on Stardate 1709.2,[7] when the ship investigated the Murasaki 312 quasar-like phenomenon on Stardate 2821.5,[8] when the ship returned to Talos IV on Stardate 3012.4,[9] when the ship investigated the loss of the U.S.S. Archon at Beta III on Stardate 3156.2,[10] and when the ship intervened in the conflict between Eminiar VII and Vendikar on Stardate 3192.1.[11]

Brent sometimes spent his off-duty time in the ship's rec room, and on one occasion on Stardate 3087.6, he was present when Lazarus formed a plan to steal the ship's dilithium crystals.[12]

Brent was also on bridge duty on Stardate 3141.9, when the Enterprise discovered the S.S. Botany Bay. Brent was one of several officers who took part in a formal dinner to welcome Khan into the 23rd century, and where his true identity as Khan Noonien Singh was revealed. Brent was rendered unconscious when Khan seized control of the Enterprise and shut off the life support systems to the bridge, and was taken captive and forced to watch while Khan attempted to kill Captain Kirk.[13]

Brent was part of a group that collected items from Omicron Ceti III to send back to the ship on Stardate 3417.3, and was among the first members of the crew to be infected by spores from pod plants that fed upon the Berthold radiation present in the system.[14] When the brief Federation-Klingon War of 2267 broke out on Stardate 3198.4, Brent was on duty at one of the science stations on the bridge, and was violently thrown from his seat when the ship was unexpectedly fired upon by a Klingon D-7 class battlecruiser.[15] He was again on duty on the bridge on Stardate 3134.0, when the ship discovered the Guardian of Forever.[16] Brent was on duty in one of the ship's fourteen science labs when Captain Kirk, Commander Spock, and Dr. McCoy were studying a captured neural parasite on Stardate 3287.2.[17]
