The second Federation starship to bear the name, the Enterprise was, like its predecessor, an Enterprise class vessel, launched on Reference Stardate 2/2210.15 (15 October 2222)[1] and placed under the command of the recently-demoted Captain James T. Kirk by the Federation Council and Star Fleet Command in appreciation for his role in saving Earth from the destructive effects of an alien probe.[2] The new Enterprise was originally to be named U.S.S. Atlantis NCC-1786, but the newly-completed Mark III cruiser was hastily renamed U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A[1] by a special act of the Federation Council.[3] The flagship of Star Fleet and a key ambassador of the Federation, the Enterprise symbolized the spirit of discovery and adventure that drove the Federation to seek that which was just beyond its reach.[4]
The Enterprise retrieved the U.S.S. Defiant NCC-1764, which had been trapped in an alternate universe after traveling through an interspace rift more than twenty years earlier, on Stardate 8544.9.[5]
