Construction on the Federation Starship Constitution, the prototype of the Constitution class cruisers,[1] was authorized by the Starfleet Appropriation of Stardate 0965.[2] The Constitution was commissioned on Reference Stardate 1/8801.04 (4 January[3] 2245[4]). Construction began at the San Francisco Fleet Yards on Reference Stardate 1/8209 (September 2239),[5] and the Constitution boasted several new technologies, most notably Duotronic computers;[6] Reference Stardate 2/0206 (June 2260) saw a refit to Mark III specifications.[7]

The ship was commanded by Fleet Captain Kelvar Garth (aka Garth of Izar) from 2251 until 2255.[8][9] The Constitution was later commanded by Commodore Darion Page from 2256 until the end of her career,[8][10] and saw combat during the Klingon War.[5] In 2267, the Constitution was at Starbase 11 for repairs.[11] The Constitution was lost in action in 2269,[8] but subsequently recovered and placed in an inactive reserve fleet on Reference Stardate 2/1205 (March 2270).[7]
