In 2270, the Defiant entered a spatial interphase and became trapped. This interphase had an adverse effect on humanoid neurophysiology and caused mass insanity among the crew. The captain managed to get a distress call out to the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 before the crew succumbed to madness and started to kill each other. By the time the Enterprise arrived at the Defiant's location on Stardate 5693.2, three weeks had passed. The crew of the Defiant was dead, and the ship had been drawn deeper into the interphase rift. Interference from the Tholians prevented the Enterprise from retrieving the Defiant, and the ship was left behind. The Defiant was last seen shimmering, suspended between dimensions, until it faded into interspace.[1]

This version of the Defiant, possibly either a quantum duplicate or originating from an alternate timeline nearly identical to the Columbia Timeline, was found drifting near the interspace rift in 2298 in the Columbia Timeline by the U.S.S. Excelsior NCC-2000[2] and retrieved in 2375 by the U.S.S. da Vinci NCC-77623 after it was rediscovered by a passing Tholian vessel.[3][4]

While testing a classified phase inverter on Stardate 5693.2, an accident caused the Defiant to fall into an interphase rift and became trapped.

The Defiant emerged into a universe where time moved far more slowly than in its native universe. While only hours passed for the Defiant, twenty years passed on the other side of the rift. The U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A was ordered to embark on a dangerous mission to retrieve the Defiant and its classified cargo on Stardate 8544.9. Despite interference from a covert Romulan agent, the mission was a complete success, and Captains Kirk and Scott recommended that the Defiant be placed in the Fleet Museum.[5]
