Construction on the Federation Starship Exeter,[1] a Constitution class cruiser,[2] was authorized by the Starfleet Appropriation of Stardate 0965.[3] The Exeter was commissioned on Reference Stardate 1/9003 (March 2247), and refit to Mark III specifications on Reference Stardate 2/0307 (July 2261).[4] In 2268, the Exeter visited planet Omega IV, where Captain Ronald Tracey unwittingly brought back a deadly virus from an ancient bacteriological war. The entire crew was infected and reduced to dehydrated crystals by the virus. Tracey returned to the surface, where he violated the Prime Directive by providing the primitive Kohm civilization with phasers to use against their rivals, the Yangs. Tracey was discovered by the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 and arrested.[2] The Exeter was scrapped, rather than risk exposing a new crew to any lingering microbial agents.[4]
