Leslie[1] was assigned to the operations division aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 in 2266. Leslie was frequently found at the engineering station adjacent to the turbolift on the bridge, including when the ship made first contact with the First Federation on Stardate 1512.2,[2] when the ship engaged a Romulan Bird of Prey that had crossed the Neutral Zone and destroyed several Earth Outposts on Stardate 1709.2,[3] when the ship investigated the disappearance of Roger Korby on Exo III on Stardate 2712.4,[4] when the ship visited the Tantalus V penal colony for the criminally insane on Stardate 2715.1,[5] and when the ship discovered a planet that was an inexplicable duplicate of Earth on Stardate 2713.5.[6]

Leslie was again at his typical post at the bridge engineering station when the ship stopped to investigate the Murasaki 312 quasar-like phenomenon on Stardate 2821.5. When transporters proved ineffective due to interference on Taurus II, Leslie assisted in getting them operational.[7] When the ship left Starbase 11 after Captain Kirk was cleared of wrongdoing in the apparent death of Lieutenant Commander Ben Finney on Stardate 2947.3,[8] and when the ship returned to the starbase before heading to Talos IV on Stardate 3012.4,[9] Leslie was again at the engineering station.[10][11]

On Stardate 2825.3, Ensign Leslie was manning the helm when the ship left Planet Q and again when it arrived at Benecia.[1] While Captain Kirk and Commander Spock were on Gothos on Stardate 2126.1, Leslie, now a lieutenant,[12] briefly took command of the bridge.[13] When the ship encountered the Gorn on Stardate 3045.6 after an attack on Cestus IV, Leslie was again at his typical post on the bridge.[14]

On Stardate 3087.6, he was at the helm when the ship investigated moments of galaxy-wide "nonexistence," which Starfleet Command believed to be a potential prelude to invasion from an alternate universe. From that position, he fired the ship's phasers, destroying Lazarus' ship on Captain Kirk's command.[15] He was knocked from his seat at the engineering station when the ship accidentally traveled back in time from Stardate 3113.2 to July 1969.[16]

When the ship discovered the S.S. Botany Bay on Stardate 3141.9, Leslie was on duty on the bridge. He was invited to join in a formal dinner with the revived Khan Noonien Singh, where the exiled despot's identity was finally revealed. Leslie was again at his post on the bridge when Khan briefly seized control of the ship, and was rendered unconscious when life support to the bridge was interrupted, then held prisoner in the briefing room and forced to watch while Khan nearly killed Captain Kirk.[17]

Leslie, like the rest of the ship's crew, was briefly overcome by the spores of a pod plant discovered on Omicron Ceti III on Stardate 3417.3.[18] He was in line at the transporter room to beam down to the surface when the group was confronted by Captain Kirk, who had not been infected. Kirk admonished them all to return to their stations, and when they refused, Kirk stressed that their actions were mutinous. Leslie only replied, "Yes, sir, it is," then turned his attention away from the captain.[19]

When the brief Federation-Klingon War of 2267 broke out on Stardate 3198.4, Leslie recoiled from his station when the Organians rendered any weapons or controls capable of furthering the violence too hot to touch.[20] On Stardate 3134.0, when the ship discovered the Guardian of Forever, Leslie was again at his post on the bridge.[21] On Stardate 3287.2, Leslie was acting as a transporter operator, and while assisting Lieutenant Commander Scott, he was rendered unconscious by Commander Spock, who was under the influence of the neural parasites.[22]
